The fleece's benefits

Fleece is part of Lafuma’s DNA. The Annecy-based brand has always worked with this material, which is simply magical – warm, lightweight, quick drying and highly breathable. Whether you want to sweat it out on coastal paths in Brittany, or simply take a stroll about town, a fleece stores up warmth. And it’s evolving all the time – often no longer looking like fleece. Details below.

Fleece features in Lafuma’s history. Its use in clothing dates from the early ‘80s, when Lafuma began to make clothing. Down-filled puffa jackets may be fashionable right now, but fleece has undergone countless changes. It is also superior to puffas in terms of compactness and speed of drying. In fact, it’s an all-round star!

In performance terms, no fabric has really done better. That’s the conclusion drawn by clothing product manager Camille Miquerol: “The warmth-to-thickness ratio of a 160g fleece (fleeces are graded by thickness, and therefore weight per square metre: 160 for the thinnest, 380 for the thickest – Ed.) was really very, very good! But as fleeces don’t have great wind resistance, you’ll ideally add a jacket with membrane to form a wind barrier.” An ideal mid layer, fleece has proven its efficiency across all applications, from the most ordinary activities through to long-distance hikes.

This polyester fabric has evolved a great deal, and acquired some unusual looks – often not even resembling a fleece.

“The fleece is brushed and sheared to give it a more traditional consistency,” explains Michaël Svitex, clothing product manager, “but its fabric lends itself to all kinds of blends that impart new characteristics: for example, it can be made softer with nylon, rayon or polyamide. A water-repellent finish can make it more resistant to water. And for extra elasticity, changing the knit pattern is all it takes.”

At Lafuma, fleece can be given a raised structure and grid pattern, with long and short pile.

“There are many ways of making fleece with new, attractive textures,” continues Michaël, “such as a brushed interior and an exterior knitted several ways, for a mix of urban and sporty styles. You can keep the properties of fleece with a sweater look, for example, in a thick and toasty pullover. One of our fleeces for women is a very thick fabric for maximum comfort, with jacquard patterns. You can play with fleece and do whatever you like!”
